Song For A Lost Cause
05:43
|
|||
1.
She sits in the darkness alone and afraid
As her strength starts to weaken and hope starts to fade
When clear through the wall of her tears
The face of St Michael the Warrior appears
And he says you know that I also have lived by the sword
Defending my land in the name of my lord
And your friends fell around you and spears pierced your gown
And now guards surround you and chains hold you down
But remember as all of these blows hit their mark
I will watch over you as you wander your way through the dark
2.
And as she sits waiting for trial to commence
Denied any council to aid her defence
Clear through the cloud of her fears
The face of St Catherine the Scholar appears
And she says you know that I also have lived by the word
And seen my words twisted, inverted and slurred
By courtrooms of men who deceive and evade
For you fight just like them and you make them afraid
So speak boldly to every insidious remark, and
I'll watch over you as you wander your way through the dark
3.
As light stings her eyes and as tears streak her cheeks
As hours become days and as days become weeks
And as weeks become months become years
The voice of St Margaret the Martyr she hears
And she says you know that I too faced a violent end
For refusing to break and refusing to bend
And you know they will bind you and burn you alive
But i'm here to remind you your deeds will survive
and on that day you join us, and as you embark
we will watch over you as you wander your way through the dark
4.
And amongst the inquisitors some would remark
If these venerable saints had appeared in the dark
Well then why did they not get involved
In the light when one word and the matter's resolved?
But I think that today I can see why they chose to withhold
It's painful to do and it feels cruel and cold
But sometimes you just can't interfere with the plot
You must watch it pass whether you like it or not
And I may not possess their angelical powers
But as everything crumbles I'll hold out a spark
As you fumble and stumble your way through the dark
I will watch over you like the saints did for Joan of Arc

"We should talk about money," she said
With a flash of the eye and a tilt of the head
And an ever so mischievous smile
She reached out fingers, and all of the while
A thin strip of sunlight was marking her shoulder
Reserving her services, plotting a course
From the white cotton blouse
To the warmth of her skin
"We should talk about money," she said with a look
"Why not email me dates that you're in?"
When she talked about money she glowed
Like putting the top down and hitting the road
Maybe she had a figure in mind
But I don't think the pound signs were making her blind
I don't think she was anything less than sincere
Her whole body relaxed as she leaned in her chair
From the nape of her neck
To the shape of her frame
I'm sure if she talked about chocolate or liquor
She would have behaved just the same
So I put in a song where my mind goes
It's the only safe place for it now, heaven knows
Aware so soon after the crash
That I shouldn't be writing a cheque I can't cash
I can't make guarantees but I'll do what I can
I explain as I lamely attempt the right thing
Out of temptation
The cradle of sleep
But if this fiscal winter gets chillier still
Here's a girl who could make me dig deep

O Mistress Mine
02:14
|
|||
O mistress mine, where are you roaming?
O stay and hear! your true-love’s coming
That can sing both high and low;
Trip no further, pretty sweeting,
Journeys end in lovers’ meeting—
Every wise man’s son doth know.
What is love? ’tis not hereafter;
Present mirth hath present laughter;
What’s to come is still unsure:
In delay there lies no plenty,—
Then come kiss me, Sweet-and-twenty,
Youth’s a stuff will not endure.

Chevy Chase
03:04
|

Once I knew this girl
She played her part
She rocked my world
She broke my heart
One day she vanished without trace
He took my place
He had a face like Chevy Chase
-----------------------------------------
Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, you know he looked like Chevy Chase
Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, he had a face like Chevy Chase
Well I could spend my life in search of her, but I see no disgrace in losing
Someone that you love to someone who looks like Chevy Chase
-----------------------------------------
And now the nights get long
The nights get cold
The seconds pass
So very slowly
Each night waiting by the phone
Each night alone oh yeah, but
Once I knew this girl
She played her part
She rocked my world
She broke my heart
One day she vanished without trace
He took my place
He had a face like Chevy Chase
-----------------------------------------
Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, you know he looked like Chevy Chase
Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, he had a face like Chevy Chase
Well I could spend my life in search of her, but I see no disgrace in losing
Someone that you love to someone who looks like Chevy Chase
-----------------------------------------
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh
Coz I don't waste
My precious days
In jealous and suspicious ways
Coz if you do
And they get thru
And wrap their arms around you
Then you will find
You're living as a prisoner in
Your own mind
You should have just forgiven her and
Walked on by
Instead it's gone and driven her away
To someone else's place
To someone else's face
Like Chevy Chase
-----------------------------------------
Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, you know he looked like Chevy Chase
Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, he had a face like Chevy Chase
Well I could spend my life in search of her, but I see no disgrace in losing
Someone that you love to someone who looks like Chevy Chase
Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, you know he looked like Chevy Chase
Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase, yeah well at least she had some taste, a lesser...
man might get all envious, but me, I know my place
Because I only look like me, and this guy looked like Chevy Chase
You know he looked like Chevy Chase
-----------------------------------------

Lye-La Lee-La
04:21

Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lay
Took the day off work today
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lye
Went to London, don't know why
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lay
Drank the afternoon away
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lye
With some junior doctors from Hay-on-Wye
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lay
We shot machine guns, threw grenades
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lye
Drove race cars and lost track of time
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lay
In the Acton cineplex arcades
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lye
Was going to call you, but I changed my mind
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lay
We saw the robots down Embankment way
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lye
We saw the Tower, saw the Eye
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lay
Were going to see the Aquarium but lost our way
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lye
Was going to call you, but I changed my mind
On the bus in the fading day
Sunlight trailing beams away
Something nagging, undefined
Was going to call you but I changed my mind
We brought this up and I tried to say
That I could see no reason why
I'd try to see you to see you cry
Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lye
(Lye-la lee-la la lee-la lye
I don't know how to say goodbye...)
